A number of posts (particularily in the poll about online vs live), comment about not liking online because they cannot get a read on players. I would like to know what everyone elses thoughts are on this. I believe that you can read players by their betting habits and patterns - which is something that doesnt require being able to see them. Whilst this is not a perfect science, neither is looking for tells either. What is your opinion on this topic

I agree to some extent, hoever sighting someones tell is almost impossible for online. There are a few signs, but not as many as in live games.

some say that people betting very quickly is agood tell, but for what, and computer reaction times can vary its individual dependent on the persons computer,in early stages of tournement there are idiots out there who plan their bluff, say your holdin ace 10 the suit does't matter, and a guy thats been seein every flop(lets say the first 10) raises triple blind quickly preflop and it comes 10, 4 q and as soon as its his turn to bet guinness are on the phone to him for the fastest all in in history, chances are he's planned this move before he saw his own cards and i would call, be careful though, if he(or she) took a little longer a little to bet, and its a little later in to competition, and you'd seen them win a few hands, well don't ask me its a stupid computer!!!!!!

I find that speed of placing bets is sometimes dependent on the speed of connection. I try and pay attention to how much people bet, and then I go back to hand history (if they played the hand out) to see what they were betting with. I get some good insite into what they are doing. I also like the bunnies in MTTs that go all-in all the time, as they get lulled into a false sense that no-one will call them and they can steal blinds at will. If I am patient enough to wait until I have got a good hand, I can usually double up, and then the other on to watch for is when someone has lost 90% of their chips, or feel they have had a bad beat - the very next hand is all-in regardless what the cards.

With MTT's and moving from one table to the next so quickly, it is really hard, but I agree that reaction time seems to be the tell...you just have to know if its a good or bad tell :)

What about preventing others getting read on you...? 1st thing 1st... live... dont look at your cards before its your turn to act... sounds very basic, but thats the best read I've got live on most of my opponents... Poeple tend to act diferently when they plan to enter a pot and when they plan to fold. Hoever, it dosent give a big tell on the streght of hte hand, but at least, it tells you if its playable or not! KJ
